Dan Campbell Of The Wonder Years Reveals Solo Project, Aaron West And The Roaring Twenties

You’re going to get to know Aaron West very well this summer.

Who is Aaron West, you ask? He is the character at the center of Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties, the new solo project of Dan Campbell, vocalist of pop punk favorites The Wonder Years. Here’s what Campbell has to say about the project and his upcoming album, We Don’t Have Each Other, produced by Ace Enders of The Early November and out July 8 on Hopeless Records:

Everything I had ever written lyrically up to this point had been non-fiction. I wanted to push myself to get those same emotions out of a character piece, to make a piece of fiction feel just as raw and personal as songs about my life, and so I created a man named Aaron and I set out to truly understand him. I wanted to know where his parents were from and what God he grew up knowing. I wanted to know what football team breaks his heart every December and if he has it in him to give up smoking. I wanted to know how he got here. I wanted to know how he handled tragedy.

Musically, the album draws from folk rock influences like The Mountain Goats and The Weakerthans, two groups Campbell has previously referenced in Wonder Years lyrics. You can hear a clip of a new song in the project’s introductory video, which you can check out after the break. Campbell’s unmistakable voice and acoustic guitar strums are reminiscent of The Wonder Years’ “Madelyn,” but the song is fleshed out with banjo, drums, and a full horn section. It’s a far cry from the style of The Greatest Generation, but We Don’t Have Each Other is already my most anticipated album of the rest of the year.

Around the album’s release date, Campbell will be playing five dates on the Acoustic Basement Stage at the Vans Warped Tour. You can see those, along with the album’s tracklist, below.
