Netflix In Talks For ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ TV Series

“If you wanna smear mud on your ass, smear mud on your ass – just be honest about it.”

Variety is reporting that streaming giant Netflix is currently in talks to develop an original series based on David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer. No, we do not know if this will impact the possibility of the film receiving a proper sequel.

Released in 2001, Wet Hot American Summer featured a cast of young comedic talent playing counselors for the fictional camp Firewood. If picked up, the new series would reunite the original film’s cast with a 10-episode arc, despite the fact most of the actors are now well into their 40s. No plot details have been revealed at this point.

According to sources, the new series would allow the Wet Hot American Summer universe to return without the hassle of figuring out when the original cast can reunite. Actors would only be required to shoot for a few days, and in that time would film all the scenes they have for the entire season as not every actor will appear in every episode. It’s a formula similar to the one used by Netflix to bring back Arrested Development, which may or may not further excite you.

Fans have been asking for a sequel to Wet Hot American Summer since the film’s initial release, but it wasn’t until 2011 that creator David Wain even mentioned the possibility of such a production being attempted. Since that time Wain has given several progress updates, usually in reference to how much of the script had been written, but always made it known that scheduling and funding were the biggest hurdles between fans and a second WHAS. Netflix could certainly help cover costs, and a setup similar to AD does simplify scheduling quite a bit. It might not be a full-blown sequel, but it could turn out to be something even better.

Netflix has not commented to the press on this story, and as far as we know David Wain has remained silent as well. We’ll bring you more information as soon as additional details can be confirmed.
