Though it has been considered true by many in the media for essentially a year at this point, Variety has confirmed that Brad Pitt will star in the planned sequel to 2013’s World War Z. That film, which just so happens to be the highest grossing of Pitt’s entire career, raked in more than $540 million worldwide. You might not like sequels, but with numbers like that it’s hard to argue with the idea that a ‘part 2’ might be good for business.
In other World War Z sequel news, Paramount Pictures has revealed that Steven Knight has been tapped to script the film, which will be directed by Penny Dreadful‘s J.A. Bayona. The plot is being kept tightly under wraps, but it is believed that the film will be an original story and not a continuation of the material adapted from Max Brooks’ best-selling novel (World War Z).
We were not the biggest fans of World War Z, but it was undeniably exciting to see a major studio put so much time, money, and effort into a large scale horror project. Considering the success of the original, it’s likely the sequel will have an even bigger budget and scale, which at the very least has us interested to see what ideas the studio might have in mind as far as plot is concerned. There is currently no release date set for the project, however, so we have no idea when additional details may become available. Follow UTG on Twitter for updates.
