‘Maleficent’ Reigns Over Box Office

In the midst of a busy box office weekend packed full of knights, kings, cowboys, and death, it had all ended with Maleficent sitting atop of the competition, with over $70 million to show.

The Disney film was originally expected to earn about $50 million, but as we can see now, that was a blatant underestimation. This all goes to show that despite mediocre reviews, the combination of live action fairy tales and the return of Angelina Jolie is just what American filmgoers are looking for now that we’ve already seen three superhero films and a Godzilla reboot in the past two months.

Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West made its debut as well, earning merely $17 million after being expected to earn $25 million. In a sense, this doesn’t seem all that bad, considering that this is an R-rated comedy competing up against a family film (produced by Disney, nonetheless), but when compared to MacFarlane’s past cinematic effort, 2012’s Ted, this looks to be a bit of a miss.
