Opeth Announce New Album, Stream “Cusp of Eternity”

On August 26, Swedish metal band Opeth will drop a new studio album titled Pale Communion via Roadrunner Records. The eight-track release is their eleventh studio album. With frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt producing and Porcupine Tree guitarist Steven Wilson mixing, it should see the band’s sound expanding into more psych and prog influences as their last release, 2011’s Heritage, did. As the press release notes, it will have very little “growls or death metal vocals.”

“I wanted to do something more melodic with this album. There’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall,” Åkerfeldt said of the release. “I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process.”

Single “Cusp of Eternity” is the first track we get to hear off of Pale Communion and so far it lines up with Åkerfeldt’s description. Instead of their usual death metal sound, it highlights heavy percussion and slow, brewing guitars that line up more in the vein of Swans.
