Seminal stoner/doom metal band Sleep has announced a handful of August U.S. tour dates. The group was initially active throughout the 1990s before calling it quits in 1998 amidst a label dispute surrounding the release of their one-track, 63-minute opus Dopesmoker.
Guitarist Matt Pike would form High on Fire in the band’s wake, while vocalist/bassist Al Cisneros would later move forward in experimental metal group Om. Sleep has performed intermittently since playing their first reunion show in 2009, enlisting the services of Jason Roeder (Neurosis) after original drummer Chris Hakius retired from music in 2010.
All that said, Sleep shows remain an extremely rare occurrence. So what I’m saying is this: if you happen to live in or near Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago or some place called Pioneertown, CA, you should consider yourself blessed and get your ass down to one of these shows. Tickets go one sale this Friday (June 6), with dates and details after the jump.
08/24 Boston MA – House of Blues (w/ Heavy Blanket)
08/25 New York NY – Stage 48
08/26 Philadelphia PA – Union Transfer
08/28 Chicago IL – Thalia Hall (w/ Corrections House)
08/30 Pioneertown CA – Pappy & Harriets
