SINGLE REVIEW: Gold Top – “Gold Like This” (Feat. Soulja Boy)

Artist: Gold Top
Song: “Gold Like This” (feat. Soulja Boy)
Genre: Trap
Label: Dirty Duck Audio

Depending on how invested you are in the rap scene, the mention of Soulja Boy could conjure up vague images of a certain widespread dance craze, vivid memories of cooking furiously to his collaborations with fellow online enigma Lil B, or a slew of increasingly disappointing mixtapes as his potential seemed to fade away. In 2014, Soulja appears to finally be on the rise again, though, albeit in yet another new form, this time as a feature artist with his appearance on Nicki Minaj’s “Yasss Bish.” Looking to continue his new-found movement as a sought after contributor of his signature style to others’ tracks, he recently entered the studio with UK trap producer Gold Top to unleash a sleek trap banger, entitled “Gold Like This.”

While Soulja is undoubtedly the larger of the two names attributed to “Gold Like This,” he is more so a compliment to the track rather than a massive, show-stealing feature as he only contributes one line to the song that is modulated and placed at each buildup. Yet, the swagger that surrounds his appearance is more than enough to warrant excitement when combined with the absolutely ace production of Gold Top. Crisp snare hits, wonky synth lines, and bass in all the right places come together to drive “Gold Like This” as Soulja tops it all off by spitting “I got gold chains / I got gold ropes / I got gold rims / I got gold spokes / you ain’t never seen gold like this” before the song drops into what will likely send crowds into air pull-up madness. In its essence, it’s an exercise in energy-fueled trap at its finest, so it will be no surprise if we see more of Gold Top working within the rap scene and Soulja continuing to explore the electronic scene in the near future.
