REQUIRED LISTENING: Wand – “Flying Golem”

Garage rock is one of those genres where it’s easy to write something listenable, but difficult to write something that stands out from the rest. Thankfully Ty Segall‘s tourmates Wand are putting out a new record that’s got the right amount of fuzz, uptempo drums, and voice filters to have you fall in love with their sound. The album, titled Ganglion Reef, comes out August 26 on Drag City imprint GOD?.

Our first taste of the record comes in the form of “Flying Golem.” With a delicate The Moon & Antactica-esque intro that gives way to a twisted jam verging on psychedelic zone-outs, “Flying Golem” is a perfect mold of updated garage rock. Even laptop speakers can separate its muddled muff bass from the high pitched ’70s squeal of its guitar. Imagine Modest Mouse hanging out with Tame Impala for a while and deciding to throw down a mastered garage mix for the hell of it. That’s what this sounds like.
