36 People Were Sent To The Hospital During Opening Night Of Avicii’s US Tour

Another week, another story about young people not knowing how to handle their high at a large scale EDM event.

The Boston Globe is reporting that 36 people were sent to the hospital last night during a performance from top 40 artist Avicii at TD Garden. The event was the opening night of Avicii’s US and European tour, which is scheduled to run until September. No deaths or life threatening injuries have been reported.

As the story goes, throngs of dance music fans descended on TD Garden yesterday following a sunny day in Boston that included temperatures in the upper eighties. The concert took on heightened urgency when medical emergency services declared a Phase 2 MCI (Mass Casualty Incident), indicating about 30 people needed to be taken to hospitals. There were numerous ambulances and a Boston EMS emergency trailer, along with Boston police, at the scene.

One concert-goer, Mike Santostefano of New England, told The Globe about the scene inside.

“You couldn’t breathe if you were on the floor,” he said. “It was the best and worst time ever.”

He said he saw “a lot of people who couldn’t handle themselves. People who don’t do drugs come here and do drugs.”

It is unclear at this point whether or not illicit drugs such a Molly, which has historically played a role in large scale incidents at EDM events, played a role in last night’s troubles. Boston police Superintendent in Chief William G. Gross commented on questions from press regarding this matter by stating, “there may have been some illicit drug involved, but none have been identified.”

Gross later mentioned that large incidents involving drug and alcohol problems are common at techno concerts. “We’ve seen this type of behavior, alcohol, abuse of other drugs, before.”

The majority of concert-goers experiencing problems last night were said to be between the ages of 16 and 25. Police are planning to interview several of the people hospitalized in the days ahead, but for the time being no cause or culprit has been identified.

Avicii has not commented on the incident from last night, but as far as we can tell he has no plans to slow down his tour schedule as a result of this news.

If this type of story seems familiar, it may be due to the fact Boston suffered a similar incident when Zedd performed at the House Of Blues earlier this year. In that incident, one young woman died.
