RX Bandits Stream the Ridiculously-Titled “Meow! Meow! Space Tiger”

RX Bandits is back with another track from their forthcoming LP, Gemini, Her Majesty, which is due out July 22. This time around, RXB has taken their sound back in time a bit to resemble their earlier catalog with the Reggaeton-infused “Meow! Meow! Space Tiger.” The title may be a bit goofy and sound like an Adult Swim cartoon but the song is a jam, I promise.

There are still no horns (which will always be a bummer) but Steve Choi’s spacial keys and C-Gak’s expansive percussion are in full swing behind Embree’s comforting vocal delivery in this smooth cut.

“Meow! Meow! Space Tiger” is premiering over at PureVolume today. Stream it after the jump and make sure to pre-order Gemini, Her Majesty before it drops in a few weeks (iTunes | Amazon | 2×10″ vinyl). The band’s Pledge Music campaign is officially closed at this time so hopefully you acted on that. “Did you get what you wanted?”

Vocalist/guitarist Matt Embree told PureVolume the following regarding the new track:

This tune is about facing what you fear most, or rather embracing it and turning it into an aspect of yourself that you admire. It’s about breaking out of the habit of having a victim mentality and instead becoming the catalyst for something greater than yourself. I wrote this song because I went backpacking in Central America for 2 months and would hitchhike frequently. While riding in someone’s car you basically either talk with them or listen to whatever they were listening to before they picked you up. That means I listened to a lot of Reggaeton. I actually kinda grew to like it. Maybe it’s a Pavlovian response: I hear Reggaeton and am reminded of tropical weather, fresh fruit and fish tacos, perfect waves etc. I don’t know but either way this was kind of an RX take on that style of music that seemingly every super friendly guatemalan/costarican/nicaraguan dude was listening to as we bounced and rattled our way over those beloved dirt roads in the general direction that my thumb had previously pointed.

Guitarist/keyboardist Steve Choi adds:

“Meow! Meow! Space Tiger” was one of the last songs to come together in the studio. Matt had a basic framework for a chorus that we had jammed a few times before but nothing was consolidated yet. Creatively, this tune was really free with no excessive working of arrangement or parts—we all just played off of each other. This is one of those tunes where I just play the Rhodes keyboard and no guitar, so I really went deeper with the effects pedals and manipulating my pedal board for major spaciness which usually isn’t applied to keyboards as much.

Beginning July 11, RXB will be hitting the road with The Dear Hunter and From Indian Lakes. All details can be found here.
