I’ll skip to the chase, and avoid the whole rant about Zach Braff making perfect movies and arranging perfect soundtracks. This is all stuff you should know by now. After hearing The Shins’ original track for Wish I Was Here, “So Now What,” and Bon Iver’s “Heavenly Father,” you can expect that an interesting collaboration between Coldplay and Cat Power is going to be just as mind blowing.

It’s an absolutely beautiful piano ballad, which is instrumentally written by Chris Martin and co., and accompanied by the majestic vocals of Chan Marshall of Cat Power. Her vocals are haunting and strong. Martin sings melody through the chorus and makes for a splendid duet. You can stream “Wish I Was Here” over at NPR.

Zach Braff talks about the original idea for the collab: “Chris had the idea that it would be sung by a woman. I thought that was a genius idea, because one of the things the film is about is a strong woman (Kate Hudson’s character) becoming the matriarch of her family. When Chris and I were talking, we both kind of simultaneously said, ‘Cat Power.’ I reached out to Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) and she and I met and really clicked. I set her up to watch the film in her apartment. The whole time she was watching she kept texting me all the different parts she was loving. She said yes the instant it was over.”

Braff also compares the compiling of the soundtrack to making the movie. “Showing my favorite artist my film, having them write a track that was inspired by their experience and then putting that art back into the film has been one of the most thrilling aspects of making Wish I Was Here,” he writes.

The soundtrack will be released July 15 and can be pre-ordered via iTunes or the movie’s website. The film will be in theaters July 18.
