REVIEW: Allison Weiss – ‘Remember When’ EP

Artist: Allison Weiss
Album: Remember When EP
Genre: Power pop
Label: No Sleep Records

Allison Weiss has been using her guitar to win over hearts since she was 14 years old. She has written plenty of songs in that time, and released quite a few of them before she joined forces with No Sleep Records. Shortly after signing to the label she released a full-length album, and now she’s releasing a short EP this month, titled Remember When.

The EP starts off with the title track. This is my personal favorite song on the EP. It’s full of that energy that she’s known for as well as the passion she puts into each song. It sounds like she wrote it with a specific person in mind, and chances are, she probably did. Power chords on a distorted electric guitar lead the way while the drums hold a steady beat. The instruments are simple, and that’s what works for her music.

It would be too easy to mention something I like about each song. The following two tracks, “Giving Up” and “The Fall” are both solid songs. They have a bit more of that sound we’re familiar with from Weiss — love, heartache — these are themes Weiss knows all about, and she does an awesome job finding new ways to convey those feelings. With that being said, though, as someone who has listened to quite a few of her songs by now, I would like to hear a different subject other than love. I suppose indie pop in general can really only have so many serious subjects, but I’m sure she can write a great tune about quesadillas or something.

“Call Your Girlfriend” is easily one of Robyn‘s most popular songs. You know, it’s the one with the video of her having a one woman dance party in an empty auditorium. The heavy electronic beat and modified vocals are part of Robyn’s signature sound. So how does it sound stipped down and sung in the style of Allison Weiss? It sounds fucking fantastic. She makes it her very own and if I didn’t know any better I’d say she wrote it herself. She puts so much sincere emotion behind it and the listener can tell that she truly means every word. This, and the title track, are my two favorite songs on the EP.

The only thing I really don’t like on the EP is the vocal modification they made on “Take You Back.” I enjoy the lyrics, but this is the only track they altered the vocals on and it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the songs. Because of that it’s my least favorite song. That’s not saying too much though because I still enjoy it regardless.

I do wish there were more songs on the EP, but it’s an EP for a reason, and aside from that, it’s great. Weiss has a specific niche that works for her and if you were a fan of hers already this will be a great addition to your collection. If you have not listened to her music before, I recommend giving a song or two your time. You may find her to be your new favorite power pop musician.

SCORE: 9/10
