Listen to Bat For Lashes’ New Song “Skin Songs”

What do pathologists, neurologists, stem cell researchers, and hospital surgeons have in common? They’re all recording an album, of course.

Okay, okay, so it’s not just medical nerds gathering around to see how sine waves match up with sound, but rather some seriously smart medical experts teaming up with UL musicians to create a collection of songs inspired by the body’s organs. Ghostpoet, Goldie, and Bat For Lashes are the first three artists to step up to the plate. When working with the medical experts, these musicians have learned “why a chosen organ works and fails” and how to create songs “that build on this and their own emotional history and feelings.” The result is Body of Songs, a full-length record due out in 2015.

The collective have now shared the first song from Bat for Lashes‘ songstress Natasha Khan. The song, titled “Skin Song,” is a middle school look at the most obvious of our organs. She’s whispering about nerves and hairs and the very fleshy surface that is shaking when the song’s bass touches it. Then again, though, there isn’t much to learn about an organ we’re exposed to every day other than how music can raise a few bumps on that same skin. Pretty cool.
