Guillermo del Toro Talks ‘Hellboy 3’ And Whether Or Not It Will Ever Happen

This is a bit of hard post for me to write, dear readers. I have loved the character of Hellboy long before he was brought to the big screen in 2004, but to this day I stand by the cinematic franchise as one of the best comic adaptations of all time. Sadly, it seems like the rest of the world does not agree.

Recently, Guillermo del Toro was amidst a big promotional campaign for The Strain when he decided to spend an afternoon answering fans’ questions via Reddit. During his AMA, del Toro was asked about the fate of Hellboy 3, which fans have been waiting almost half a decade to learn about. “Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively,” he stressed. “But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from MY side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters.”

Both Hellboy films performed admirably at the box office, but neither made back its estimated production budget based on US ticket sales alone. That’s all the reason the studio needs to have cold feet, and unless a miracle occurs it does not seem likely that we will see a change on the Hellboy front any time soon. Still, if some stroke of luck does miraculously occur, del Toro claims he already has a plan for the trilogy’s final adventure.

“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film,” he said. “He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”

The Strain premiered last night on televisions across the globe. We don’t cover TV, but between us I think every fan of Guillermo’s work should check it out. We’ll bring you more on Hellboy‘s fate as soon as new developments emerge.
