Perfume Genius Announces New Album ‘Too Bright,’ Streams Single “Queen”

Seattle songwriter Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, is back with his third full-length LP, Too Bright, and it’s due out September 23 via Matador. The follow-up to 2012’s gorgeous Put Your Back N 2 It was self-recorded along with Portishead’s Adrian Utley and features a guest appearance from PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish.

Hadreas has shared single “Queen” and it takes on a much braver, bolder stance than his previous record. As a gay musician who has undergone all sorts of traumatic experiences, he has a way of crafting his life experiences into songs that touch at intimate subjects without isolating those who may not connect directly with it. According to a representative for Hadreas, “Queen” is about “gay panic” and feeling a sense of power over those who are scared of him in public. “Sometimes I see faces of blank fear when I walk by,” he wrote. “If these fucking people want to give me some power—if they see me as some sea witch with penis tentacles that are always prodding and poking and seeking to convert the muggles—well, here she comes.”
