Nas Drops Video For ‘Illmatic’s “Represent” After Two Decades

Yes, you read that headline right. There are few people who can drop a new music video for a song that is 20 years old, and Nas is certainly one of them. Of course not every hip-hop artist can stay relevant, respected, and nostalgic all at the same time. But most rappers haven’t put out timeless debut records that can be placed on the same shelf as Illmatic.

The video for “Represent” was shot in California at the YouTube Space, a production facility in Los Angeles. Mr. Nasir Jones held a contest encouraging fans to contribute to the creation of the new video, ultimately giving the prize to Brian Katz who directed in collaboration with Jason Goldwatch of Mass Appeal.

The concept seems pretty straightforward: Nas bossin’ it with a cigar and reflectively throwing it back to some of his own music videos. The new work also features clips from the silent film The Thief of Bagdad (1924), which had been sampled by DJ Premier for Illmatic. You can check out the new video below.
