‘Rocky’ Musical Knocked Out On Broadway

Rocky may be an iconic film, but the Broadway adaptation of Sylvester Stallone’s most famous role will go down in history as mediocre at best.

Just a day after reports spread that the Tupac-inspired show Holler If You Hear Me would be closing on Broadway after a short run, Billboard is reporting that Rocky (the musical) will soon follow suit. Producers said Tuesday that the show will play its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on Aug. 17, after playing 28 previews and 188 regular performances.

The show, which stayed close to the original film, never really took off after opening to mixed reviews from critics and audience members alike. The final act was praised almost universally, mostly due to a boxing ring being lowered from the sky, but a show that is considered 33% good is still a disaster in most people’s books. Box office records show the musical only broke the $1 million mark once during its run, and as of late had been taking in less than half its $1.2 million weekly potential.

Stallone has yet to comment on the show’s demise, but there is always a possibility he will try to revive the performance for a live broadcast at some point in the future. Stay tuned.
