TRAILER: ‘The Conjuring’ Prequel Reveals Origins of ‘Annabelle’

In most circles, Annabelle has been referred to as a spin-off ever since it was announced shortly after The Conjuring became one of last summer’s massive box-office successes. Today, we’re given our first extended look at Annabelle, with a trailer that more or less confirms the film is actually a prequel to The Conjuring. I know. Semantics, right?

Annabelle, the origin story of the creepy doll from The Conjuring, will hit theaters on October 3. The Conjuring cinematographer John Leonetti, who also shot the Insidious movies (as well as Piranha 3D, Joe Dirt and The Scorpion King, to name a few) has taken over the director’s chair from James Wan, who has been busy filming Fast & Furious 7. Wan is still attached as a producer and I must say, as someone who rarely gets excited for mainstream horror anymore, much less a spin-off or prequel (whatever you want to call it), the trailer is undeniably creepy and its classic horror feel has piqued my interest.
