Despite its Killer Box Office Performance, ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ Fails to Dethrone ‘Apes’

The Purge franchise has surely established quite the foothold in Hollywood, but not enough to trump Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which remains to be hanging high above the bunch on this weekend’s domestic charts. Apes is poised to haul away $36 million this weekend, which comes awfully close to half as much as last weekend’s revenue and increases its total lifetime domestic gross to $126 million.

Even with the assistance of a tripled budget, The Purge: Anarchy‘s $28.47 million dollar pull didn’t even come close to its predecessor’s (The Purge), which made over $34 million on its opening weekend last June.

This weekend’s other two major premieres would include Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue, which earned $18 million and a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cameron Diaz’s Sex Tape which followed shortly behind with $15 million and a much more dismal 20% rating.
