That’s it. Just watch it. Dear White People was a hit at Sundance, and the reasons are quite apparent. From the title down, the film looks to be a witty, satirical, and long overdue modern take on racism and race relations in America today.
Even as it causes you to cringe with some of the racist lines coming out of actors’ mouths, the trailer attacks undaunted. Dear White People‘s edges look to be sharpened for greatest effect, not dulled for wider appeal. This movie is here to say something, and it’s coming through loud and clear. From a humor standpoint, I’m not sure anything can top seconds 43 through 45 in the teaser, but there is certainly plenty of contention here.
The film was written and directed by Justin Simien and stars Tessa Thompson (Jackie in Veronica Mars), Tyler James Williams (Chris in Everybody Hates Chris), Teyonah Parris (Dawn in Mad Men), and a number of other actors who look to have the brightest moments of their careers here (the reasons for that are addressed by this very film). Dear White People comes out on October 17; make room for this fresh take in your autumn life.
