We were won over back in June by a marvelous synth-disco group named The Juan MacLean. While they’re not a common household name yet, the duo boasts plenty of talent. Comprised of John MacLean and former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang, The Juan MacLean are an electronic dance group whose upcoming record, In A Dream (out September 16 via DFA Records), is well worth noting down in your planner to pick up when it drops.
We’ve already heard the eight-minute progressive opening number “A Place Called Space,” so today The Juan MacLean have unveiled “A Simple Design.” It immediately wins listeners over as a sleek, distressed pop tune that nods to the bubbly childish samples of Royksopp while keeping the classic sounds of pioneers like Arthur Russell. Pairing it alongside their first single, it’s clear The Juan MacLean used the five years between their last album and this one to hone their craft and, potentially, create the best album of their career.
