REVIEW: Lumberjvck – ‘Jvckwood’ EP

Artist: Lumberjvck
Album: Jvckwood EP
Genre: Bass music
Label: Rottun Recordings

As heard during his live shows and mixes, Excision, Canada’s resident creator of skull-shaking dubstep, has quite the ear for electronic music of all varieties. Thus, it’s no surprise that his label, Rottun Recordings, is filled to the brim with rising talents from across the scene. After stumbling across a producer named Lumberjvck and realizing he was a part of said label, it took little convincing to listen to the teaser for his record, Jvckwood, and quickly becoming interested in hearing how it would flesh out in its entirety.

Fortunately, it seems Jvckwood does not disappoint as heard on the KhemehK-assisted track, “Bumpwood,” a genre-bending assault packed with tattering trap snares, crunchy synths, and a metal guitar riff to match. Believe it or not, this ends up being the lightest of the EP’s four tracks, though, as Lumberjvck veers into the heaviest territories of electronic music via absolutely devastating drops. Cuts such as “Reelfoot Lake” pierce the air with screeching deathstep tendencies while the percussion in “Cordwood” marches along in hardstyle fashion before melting into a trapstep breakdown.

The album closer, “Mirkwood,” is a fitting ending to a 15-minute crash course in Lumberjvck’s ability to run with the best of those on his label (and even the man at the top) as its machine-gun synths and liquid bass lines solidify the notion that Jvckwood is quite possibly one of the best electronic releases of 2014.

SCORE: 9/10
