The Chainsmokers Build Their Own Music Video Universe With “Kanye”

Whether or not you love The Chainsmokers‘ viral hit “#Selfie” you have to give the duo credit for finding a way to cash in on the most annoying photo trend since the days we all exclaimed ‘Myspace shot’ whenever someone posed in front of their mirror. That one silly song made it possible for the group to reach countless new listeners, and now they’re back with a new potential smash called “Kanye.”

We missed the initial premiere of “Kanye,” but after seeing the song’s official video earlier this week there was no way we could resist writing a post. You know how Marvel has essentially changed the way every studio in Hollywood makes movies by leveraging the idea of a ‘cinematic universe’? Every character resides in the same make believe land, which allows for endless crossovers and stories that extend beyond the duration of a single film. It’s an idea that has led many other studios down paths toward mediocrity (The November Man, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), but no one has taken it upon themselves to cash in on the parody version of this idea. That is, until now.

The video for “Kanye” begins at almost the exact same point in time that viewers first meet the girls who lead the video for “#Selfie.” Instead of seeing the rich girls discuss their first world problems, viewers are given the perspective of a nearby maid. When the girls leave the room to head out for the night, the maid can’t resist trying on their clothes and jewelry, which kick-starts a night of partying that is filled with ups and downs the young woman will never forget. You can view the video below:

Did you see The Chainsmokers disguised as bartenders at the club? Sneaky.

There was no hint of universe building in “#Selfie,” but given the way the video above ends I think it’s entirely possible that The Chainsmokers will continue this trend with what I assume will be the eventual video for “Polkadots.” Follow UTG on Twitter for updates.
