AFROPUNK 2014: Cipher Reunite To Honor Life Of Danny Bobis

“I know Danny was feeling every single moment of it. I know Danny was rocking with us,” says Cipher vocalist Maurice “Moe” Mitchell.

Three years ago, the New York hardcore community lost one of our brothers, Daniel Bobis, in a tragic accident. He was a man who was able to foster various types of relationships with people of all different shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. To some he was a friend, a husband, a band-mate, a teacher, a surfer, or just an all around good guy. For myself personally, he was above the rest, a role model.

It took many days for the wounds to begin to heal for the members of Cipher, the hardcore band that Bobis played in for many years. They decided that last weekend would be a good time to reunite and pay homage to Danny at the 2014 Afropunk Festival in the Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn. The lineup was diverse and stacked, featuring bands such as Bad Brains, Body Count, Trash Talk, and many more.

In my eyes, the most important part of the day was to sit down with the members of Cipher and reflect in positivity on our friend’s life and to discuss what the day meant to them. A band that was always largely into social activism, vocalist Mitchell took the opportunity on stage to not only dedicate their time to their fallen brother, but also to discuss the injustice happening in Ferguson, MO, urging the members of the crowd to join them in a symbol of solidarity.
