Alt-J Go ‘Eleanor Rigby’ In Releasing ‘Boy’ And ‘Girl’ Videos For “Every Other Freckle”

Alt-J are always different. Alt-J are always the same. So it is with the songs, which are characterized by a sweeping grandeur regardless of whether they are sweeping epics or truckers’ odes. So it is with the videos, which have different directors but the same slow motion hyperrealism. Alt-J’s trendy unpredictability is almost predictable, and it extends to the videos. They’re different, but always in a way that makes sense.

Where the “Hunger Of The Pine” video felt quite Hunger Games-y (or possibly Wolverine-esque) and  the “Left Hand Free” video felt all kinds of Americana, the two videos for “Every Other Freckle” immediately call to mind The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. For the uninitiated, that film is a story told in two parts, one film from the perspective of Jessica Chastain’s character and the other from that of James McAvoy’s character. The films have been united into The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them, but that isn’t relevant here.

What’s relevant is that Alt-J seem to be a band always able to deliver exactly what we want while still maintaining the appearance of an artsy, forward-thinking group. That’s invaluable, and it continues to pay dividends. So watch those abstractly sexual videos below; instead of Rigby‘s Him and Her, they’re Olivier Groulx’s Boy and Girl. Caveman and cat included.
