Meghan Trainor Extends Her Fifteen Minutes Of Fame With “Title”

Meghan Trainor came out of nowhere this summer and delivered one of the season’s biggest hits with “All About That Bass.” The song, which was heavily influenced by early pop music, sold a message of universal beauty with just enough sass to grab your attention. ‘Ass’ became ‘Bass’ and though many complained it was not the best message for women, hundreds of thousands thought otherwise.

Today, Trainor is attempting to extend her moment in the spotlight by sharing a new single called “Title.” It’s the second song the Cape Cod based singer has released to date, and in a vein not too distant from “Bass” its accompaniment is relatively simple. The track deals with Trainor attempting to explain to her man that she is no longer satisfied being his regular hookup by threatening to stop having sex with him altogether unless he gives her the ‘title’ she deserves. My guess is that she is referring to ‘girlfriend,’ but something tells me ‘master’ would suffice. You can stream the song, in full, below:

The song is catchy and should perform admirably at radio, but something about Trainor’s outlook on the world and way women fit into it just rubs me the wrong way. She’s not encouraging anyone to better themselves or to put more value in their sexual encounters, but rather to use sex as a bargaining tool in order to get what you want from the people in your life. It’s not about love, it’s about control, and making sure women have more of it than men. Given the amount of coverage in the media going to feminism these days, it’ll be curious to see if people accept this message or see it for what it really is (a gimmick).
