Robert Downey Jr. Claims There Are No Plans for ‘Iron Man 4′

Iron Man is arguably the most popular character in the Marvel cinematic universe. After all, it’s because of the original Iron Man film that every Marvel movie and tie-in that has followed was even able to exist. Without Robert Downey Jr. and crew winning fans over with that initial offering there may have never been an Avenger Initiative in the first place. One might think that alone would be reason enough for Marvel to milk the Tony Stark franchise for all its worth, but according to the star of the series that does not appear to be the case.

Robert Downey Jr. has spent the better part of the past week in Toronto promoting his forthcoming drama The Judge. During that time, RDJ sat through a number of press interviews, including a segment with Variety that eventually turned its focus to the world of Marvel movies. When asked about whether or not Tony Stark would receive another solo film, RDJ replied “There isn’t one in the pipe. No, there’s no plan for a fourth Iron Man.”

This is bound to be heartbreaking news to fans of the Iron Man franchise, but it’s not the most surprising Marvel revelation of all time. Kevin Feige recently stated that he would like to release at least two films every year, one for continuing a popular franchise and the other to launch a new one. With the success of Guardians Of The Galaxy, it seems likely this will be the plan Marvel sticks with for the time being. Here is Feige’s full quote:

I don’t know that we’ll keep to [that model] every year, but what we’re doing this year [in 2014] and what we’re doing next year is: existing franchise, new franchise, existing franchise, new franchise. So I think it would be fun to continue that sort of thing. I don’t know that we will [do that] all the time, but as a general model, I think that would be fun.

The second Avengers film is slated for release next year. RDJ’s contract is complete once the promotional efforts for that film come to a close. Whether or not he signs on for more films may hinge on the continuation of the Iron Man franchise. Follow UTG on Twitter for updates.
