‘Crouching Tiger’ Sequel to Hit Netflix and IMAX On The Same Day

This is what we call a ‘game changer’ in the entertainment industry. Netflix has been eyeing first-run films for a very long time, and in the near future they will make that dream a reality.

Netflix and The Weinstein Co. have signed a deal to release the sequel to Ang Lee’s beloved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon simultaneously on Netflix and in select IMAX theaters around the world. The film, which is titled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, will be released on August 28, 2015.

“The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” said TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”

According to Netflix, Crouching Tiger 2 is one of many films that the company plans to release through a new same day-and-date promotional effort with IMAX. No additional titles have been revealed at this point, but we will keep you updated as additional films are revealed.

Most theater owners have taken a strong stance against same day-and-date films, which means Crouching Tiger 2 may have an incredibly limited IMAX release here in the states. Chains like Regal and AMC may not want to associate with the title for fear more films follow suit, leading to diminished receipts for the theaters over time. There will always be people who want the ‘theater experience,’ but if every film was also immediately available from the comfort of your own home at a reasonable price can you honestly say you would visit the cinema as often as you do now?

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was released in 2000 and went on to be nominated for best picture and win the best foreign language Oscar at the Academy Awards. You can view the film’s trailer below.
