Cineplexes across the nation have been packed out this weekend thanks to the highly-anticipated arrival of Gone Girl and Annabelle. By a very narrow margin of one million dollars, the former of the two topped the charts with $38 million in weekend sales, according to studio estimates.
These two films that have breaking well above $30 million (along with September’s Maze Runner and The Equalizer) prove to show that this year’s fall season is nowhere near as dry as it’s historically been.
But things haven’t been peachy for all of this weekend’s new releases. Left Behind‘s pull fell short seven million dollars, despite Nicolas Cage’s star power and the potential carryover success from the twelve-part novel series written by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins.
