Watch tUnE-yArDs Battle Colorful Mannequins in “Real Thing” Video

Freak folk has a new queen, and she’s still ruling the world months after her latest release. Merill Garbus, aka tUnE-yArDs, has just shared a new video for “Real Thing” off of this year’s LP Nikki Nack via NPR. In a press release, Garbus said the following:

I believe “Real Thing” was the one song I didn’t want to make a video for. It has too many images of its own in the lyrics, and could mean so many different things for different listeners… I love leaving room for audiences to paint their own mental pictures. What changed my mind is wanting so much for this particular song to be heard by more people. We chose Tom Jobbins’ idea because it framed the sometimes heavy lyrics in a Charlie Chaplin-like, humorous idea of me being a box of body parts in a factory. A simple and light-hearted backdrop for some complex and weighty ideas.

The video, directed by Tom Jobbins, sees Garbus in her usual face paint trying to escape a colorful mannequin factory. She’s trying her best to escape and eventually makes peace with the store models. It’s a brash, brilliant video that uses animation and live action for a wildly entertaining take.
