This may seem almost impossible to believe, but eight long years have passed since Gwen Stefani released any new material. For a short time she was the reigning queen of alternative pop, but then her focus switched to family and though we were sad we could not complain.

Today, Gwen Stefani is back in music headlines with the release of a new single titled “Baby Don’t Lie.” The song is built on thick waves of anthemic synth, which Stefani uses to craft a story about romance and deception that harkens back to her previous hits while delivering a decidedly more mature sound. It’s not a complete 180 from the days of “Rich Girl,” but it’s definitely more geared towards the adult contemporary audience than those praying for the next day school is cancelled. Check it out:

“Baby Don’t Lie” is the first single to surface off Stefani’s new solo album, which is expected to be released before the end of 2014. Back in September, Billboard reported that the album will feature production work from Stefani’s frequent collaborator (and fellow Voice coach) Pharrell Williams and be executive produced by Blanco.
