It’s no secret that there’s a definite hit and miss game to releasing micro-horror films. When a production tanks, more often than not, flukes are forgotten and never remembered again, but sometimes, the returns can be massive. This was exactly the case with Blumhouse Productions’ Ouija, which topped this weekend’s box office charts with a shocking $20 million pull.
Perhaps it’s to blame on the Halloween season, but despite having an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Keanu Reeves’ John Wick only managed to open with about $14 million in sales. This weekend also saw an expanded release of Bill Murray’s St. Vincent, which made an estimated $8 million. Considering the fact that it’s currently earning about $3.5k per theater, that’s actually a great performance.
