Benedict Cumberbatch In Final Negotiations To Play Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

The good people over at Deadline dropped the biggest news bomb of the day and possibly of the week. It is now reported that Benedict Cumberbatch of Star Trek Into Darkness and Sherlock is in final negotiations to play Doctor Strange for Marvel Entertainment’s upcoming 2016 film adaptation. This news comes after Joaquin Phoenix’s involvement never came to fruition. Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, and even Ethan Hawke were also rumored to be attached at one point.

The original comic line behind Doctor Strange told the story of a surgeon, Stephen Strange, who after an accident renders one of his hands useless, and travels down a spiral of poverty and depression. Hearing about a sorcerer who may have the cure for his ailment, Strange is taken under the sorcerer’s wing. Instead of returning as a surgeon, Strange is trained to protect the world against evil.

The upcoming Doctor Strange adaptation, releasing on July 8, 2016, is directed by Scott Derrickson of Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil fame. Written by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts, Doctor Strange will release as part of Phase Three under Marvel Entertainment’s comic book film slate. Would have personally preferred any of the rumored actors attached. All 3 have wowed me, maybe on multiple occasions, whereas Cumberbatch is yet to. Maybe this could be that time, though.
