REVIEW: Too Close To Touch – ‘Too Close To Touch’ EP

Artist: Too Close To Touch
Album: Too Close To Touch EP
Genre: Post Hardcore
Label: Epitaph Records

Ladies and gents, prepare yourself for the arrival of an exciting newcomer in the post-hardcore scene: Lexington, Kentucky’s Too Close To Touch. The 5-piece assembly from the birthplace of Emarosa have recently announced their signing to Epitaph Records and released an exciting self-titled EP.

Despite the EP being only 4 tracks long, each song is a uniquely pleasing aural experience that glistens with the soaring vocals of frontman Keaton Pierce, who delivers an impressive performance throughout. Pierce’s hooks are downright catchy, plus he demonstrates excellent range and diversity from well-timed uses of falsetto to a powerful array screams and strained vocals; all complementing his smooth, natural style.

The music itself feels larger than life, and the overall mix and recording quality of the EP ensure that the driving guitar licks deliver the perfect level of crunch without overpowering any of the other elements. The Too Close To Touch EP is excellent for anyone who is fan of I The Mighty, Emarosa or Broadway. Its opening track, “The Deep End,” was a quick sell for me personally, and fans of the genre are bound to feel the same way.

Other than its short (but sweet) 15-minute runtime, my only complaint about the effort is the lack of diversity in sound. While each track is by itself dynamic, they are all wrapped in a very similar post-hardcore style that causes the tracks to run together in early listens. As I said, the execution is flawless, but I’d like to see the band branch out a bit more with their next release.

You’ll absolutely want to keep an eye on Too Close To Touch, since they’ll undoubtedly be hitting the road with some great bands soon.
