Murder By Death Launch Kickstarter To Fund New Album ‘Big Dark Love’

Murder By Death, strangely enough, have the third most successful music-related campaign in Kickstarter history. In 2012, they raised $187,048 for the funding of their record Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon – that’s a pretty gigantic amount of money. The band has returned with another Kickstarter for their upcoming record, this time asking for $150,000 to fund Big Dark Love.

While Kickstarter began as a way for struggling artists to garner donations, it has clearly become much more than that. Fans are clearly willing to pay more for the content that they want. Taking one look at the band’s crowdfunding campaign, someone has already paid $6,000 toward the album and a private show perk. Using crowd-funding as a modified pre-order method clearly works; if more artists can capitalize on this type of funding, we might just live to see a day without major labels.

You can donate to the campaign here. As of publication, the band has raised $118,169.

I am not knowledgeable of this particular band, but I would say your suggestion at the end of the article may be without merit. If a “nobody” band were to somehow produce a demo, go on some local shows and get their name out there as much as they can without a label, I really doubt they would be able to drum up a substantial amount of support on kickstarter or campaign funds like this. It seems the bands that have been successful with this have been through the mud with record labels before and benefitted from this kind of publicity before going on their own. I’m not saying labels are the answer and most of my favorite music is from bands before they were even signed, but there is some validity to that system to actually be recognized to the point of garnering the kind of support a band like this is achieving.
