Watch Angel Olsen’s New Elizabethan Video for “Windows”

This week, Angel Olsen will release the deluxe version of Burn Your Fire For No Witness, her remarkable LP from earlier this year. The expanded package includes new songs, outtakes, and that crisp vinyl sound all wrapped up neatly in clean packaging. One of the album’s original songs, “Windows,” has just gotten music video treatment in anticipation of the release.

Directed by Rick Alverson, the video sees Angel Olsen at a particularly dampening time. She watches as children play in a field, stares ahead blankly while Vaseline is smeared on her face, and stands disconnected in Elizabethan clothes that seem heavy with unfamiliarity. In a statement about the video, Olsen said, “I gave [Alverson] total freedom to set the tone and I wanted only to be present within it. I wanted to make something cinematic and forward, and I believe he did that here.” Both visually stunning and contextually confusing, the entire piece is just that: a perfect fit for this haunting, ethereal ballad.
