Hear N.E.R.D. Reunite on “Squeeze Me”

Funk hip-hop band N.E.R.D., the moniker for trio Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley, got back together to put out their first new song in four years, a recorded follow-up to their onstage appearance at Odd Future’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles last month. The song, titled “Squeeze Me,” is from the new upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie and is their first new material since 2010’s Nothing.

“Squeeze Me” is an appropriately bright, fun, tropical song to fit the film. When Variety sat down with Hugo to discuss the song in more depth, he explained that they tried to step back from the animation aspect and reached out for a generally loose sound. “We’re trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense, but more just like a psychedelic, otherworldy type of thing,” he said. “If you want to draw a parallel, maybe think of what the Beatles did with ‘Yellow Submarine.’”
