Veil Of Maya Stream New Song, “Phoenix,” Showcase New Vocalist

Yesterday, as promised, Veil of Maya unveiled a new track titled “Phoenix.” Taken from the outfit’s upcoming full-length, which is slated to hit shelves later this year via Sumerian Records, it is the first glimpse fans have received of Lukas Magyar, who joined the group following the departure of vocalist Brandon Butler. Check it out below.

As a longtime VOM fan, I’ll be the first to admit that this latest effort is pretty disappointing. Strung together by run-of-the-mill riffs, “Phoenix” makes no attempt to stand out, and while Magyar’s vocals aren’t terrible, he has yet to grasp Veil’s signature groove. It’s a repetitive performance from a band that I know is capable of better.

Still, it’s important to keep in mind this is just a taste of what’s to come—despite its shortcomings, “Phoenix” is still better than anything off [id]. If you dig the group’s latest, you’ll be able to catch them live this January on the Slow Your Troll and Know Your Role Tour.
