Will Smith Recorded “Seven or Eight” Songs with Kanye West

The rumor mill has been circulating word of Will Smith and Kanye West recording in the studio together for years, but it seems that may actually be truth. As Consequence of Sound reports, the Fresh Prince recently stopped by Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. “I spent a week or so with ‘Ye and we went into the studio a couple of times and he’s trying to get my gassed up,” he said, adding he doesn’t “want to say, ‘Yeah I’m gonna do it!’ and then get in there and suck. I’m going to stay cautiously optimistic.”

Then, during a red carpet interview with Hollyscoop at the premiere for Focus, his new movie, Smith spilled even more details. “You know I’ve recorded a lot. I’ve recorded a lot. I don’t have anything I like yet, but I’ve probably recorded around seven or eight [songs]. It’s not for certain, it’s just explorative.”

Given Kanye has been busy flooring SNL and collaborating nonstop, taking time to enter the studio with Will Smith isn’t all that surprising. Given Smith’s recent throwback raps on Letterman, Fallon, and Kimmel, it’s all the more likely he’s teasing his return to music.
