I wasn’t the biggest fan of Sinister. There is no question that filmmaker Scott Derrickson knows how to make audiences feel uneasy in their seats, but I don’t know if that feature necessarily showcased his talent in the best light. The story, while occasionally unsettling, didn’t deliver the kind of lasting impact many modern horror films have been able to offer and almost no one has been talking about the upcoming sequel while titles like Poltergeist and Insidious 3 compete for viral fame.
Sinister 2, which arrives this summer, looks to make good on all the promises left unfulfilled by its predecessor with more thrills, chills, and explanation. The first trailer arrived earlier today, and already the internet is responding with a fresh wave of interest in the franchise’s continuation. For a film that is coming out amidst a summer that includes Avengers, Mad Max, and the two aforementioned horror tentpoles, that is quite a success in itself. You can view the footage below.
As for the story, Sinister 2 follows a young mother and her twin sons as they move into a rural house that’s marked for death. By rural, I mean to say the house is really a farm, and its setting amidst an endless ocean of corn is sure to set up plenty of tense moments for the film. Check it out:
Fun Fact: If you look closely there is even a shot of Ethan Hawke’s family during a voice-over referencing prior crimes related to the mysterious figure known as Bagul.
