UTG PREMIERE: Secret Grief – “Jet Black (Jawbreaker Cover)”

Save Your Generation Records are releasing a Jawbreaker tribute album titled What’s The Score?, and we are more than happy to premiere Secret Grief’s cover of “Jet Black.” Out June 23, digitally, and July 28 physically, What’s The Score? features a wide range of artists remembering Jawbreaker in sonic fashion.

From Jawbreaker’s 1995 release, Dear You, “Jet Black” is a classic emo song that sits high within the band’s classic discography. Secret Black have the difficult task of covering such a monumental band, let alone such a classic song, but their rendition of “Jet Black” is able to capture the dreariness and urgency of the band’s original output.

Two decades later, Secret Grief and Save Your Generation Records are reminding us of the importance of Jawbreaker, and the songs they released in their career. Though it has been quite some time since Jawbreaker was active, I would surmise that most of us have some connection to the band, be it subliminal or not.

Personally, I remember digging for as many band interviews I could find as I was first melding my music taste, and consistently hearing the name Jawbreaker being thrown around in terms of influences. I figured if all these bands I love are influenced by them, they deserve my time. It only took a few seconds of “Accident Prone” to fall in love.
