Western Massachusetts is a big place. Being from Boston, my general knowledge of Western Mass is pretty much anything past Worcester (which is totally not the case). But, within its sparse, tree-ridden beautiful landscapes, forms an exciting new group of artists, Fighting Giants. If the name doesn’t instill imagery in your head as is, let the band’s grand but consciously contained tracks soar you over the roots that bind them to the ground. It is always a treat to find a band with post-rock influences that are able to keep their musicianship in check, and formulate a song for the sake of the song, without getting lost in phaser and delay abyss.

Much like the trees that hide Western Mass, Fighting Giants find themselves reaching far above the tree line with their atmospheric musicianship, but are able to keep themselves rooted all for the sake of making every note count.

What is even more astounding is the band’s debut release, Soundbox Session, was recorded live. Keeping the process as organic as possible, Fighting Giants present their debut release in its most natural form, planted with ease, and given room to breathe.

Soundbox Sessions is a powerhouse of a debut release, even just letting go of the fact that it is all tracked live. Calming guitar riffs, backed by a collected rhythm section keep the atmosphere grounded, leaving way for vocalist/guitarist Mimi Herrick to let her vocals soar above everything else, and do they soar. Finding room to let emotional tangents rise over collected riffs is the swan song of Soundbox Sessions

Fighting Giants are planning tour the east coast this summer supporting Soundbox Sessions, but until then be sure to check out the release here.
