Coheed and Cambria have long built a fanbase around the convoluted, fictional tale their seven-album career tells. Fans of comic book-influenced narrative and prog music have come together for well over a decade to celebrate the band’s highly-conceptual universe, but their upcoming eighth LP might be their most daring yet; The Color Before The Sun removes all mentions of Heaven’s Fence and the Keywork for the band’s first entirely non-conceptual record.
The music video for the album’s first single, “You Got Spirit, Kid,” provides all of the evidence of a stylistic shift necessary. Watch as it shows the band members take on the trials of high school living, from locker room bullying to passing chemistry to buying drugs in the hallway between classes and everything in between. It’s not what we’ve come to expect from the band, but it’s an enjoyable departure that proves the band can still stretch their creative muscles in ways we’ve never seen.
