‘Danish Girl’ Trailer: Oscar Season Has Officially Begun

The first trailer for Tom Hooper’s long-awaited new film has arrived, and it’s every bit as poised for awards season glory as early reveals seemed to tease.

Set in the 1920s, The Danish Girl tells the true love story of Danish artist Einar Wegener and her wife Gerda as she makes the pioneering journey to becoming a woman, Lili Elbe. It’s Wegener’s wife who more or less introduces her to the notion of being a woman, and she stands by her side as she begins to explore her new identity. Troubles eventually arise however, and the couple’s love is put to the test. You can view the film’s first trailer below.

Eddie Redmayne is tasked with bringing Einar to life, and from what we see in the trailer it looks to potentially be a career-defining role for the actor who has had many such roles during his short time in Hollywood. Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heard, and Matthias Schoenaerts also appear.

Hooper has been teasing images of Redmayne in a dress since the beginning of 2015, and so far The Danish Girl looks as if it will live up to the hopes so many have for the feature. Given our culture’s current obsession with Caitlyn Jenner and the entire trans movement, I don’t know if Hooper could have chosen a better time to tell this story. We’ll bring you more from the film as soon as additional media is made available.

The Danish Girl arrives in theaters November 27.
