REVIEW: Say yes to Bent Knee’s ‘Say So’

bent knee review

Artist: Bent Knee
Album: Say So
Label: Cuneiform Records
Genre: Orchestral Avant-Pop

What’s in a name? That’s one of the age old questions, isn’t it? In music, a name can reflect many things; the overall aesthetic of an artist/group, a reference to a concept, or even just a hint towards a style or genre. I mean, when you hear the name Enya, your first thought isn’t Swedish death metal. There are those, of course, who ironically name their projects just to throw us off the scent. Looking at you, Marianas Trench. Read more »

Joe Mason remixes The Chainsmokers’ “Inside Out”

The Chainsmokers are as reliable as anyone when it comes to delivering electro-laced pop hits, but Sydney producer Joe Mason‘s take on their Charlee collaboration, “Inside Out,” manages to take the track to new heights. With a forward-thinking atmosphere that merges euphoric synthesizers and overarching pop sensibilities, Charlee’s stunning vocals are given new life atop a song that demands play on summer roadtrips and summer festival stages alike.

Without further ado, though, give Mason’s “Inside Out” remix and snag a free download after the jump.  Read more »

Element drops “Under The Flesh”

Element has found success with a handful of outright uplifting tracks this year, but the New York producer’s newest release is an audible journey that works toward its eventual triumph.

Entitled “Under The Flesh,” the trap production that looks to reflect “the ongoing battle with ourselves everyday” slowly adds layers of keys and percussion before climaxing into a horn-blaring, TNGHT-esque drop.

Give “Under The Flesh” a listen after the jump and be sure to grab a free download of the track as well.

moments till fall

Texas metal band Moments Till Fall have teamed with Under The Gun to premiere their heavy new album, Truth Favors The Brave, which is set to release this Friday, May 27 through Tragic Hero Records.

Speaking to UTG about the band’s newest effort, vocalist Aric Brooks says, “Truth Favors The Brave is a record we feel captures many different styles and it’s as true to ourselves as the stories we sing about. The record is melodic, thrashy, heavy sing-along music that we have literally shed blood, sweat, and tears for. We have only begun to show our colors.” Read more »

REVIEW: The Hotelier find peace from agony with ‘Goodness’

goodness feature pic

Artist: The Hotelier
Album: Goodness
Label: Tiny Engines
Genre: Taoist Indie Rock, Emo, Pop-Punk

Like many fans of The Hotelier, I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard their breakout sophomore record, Home, Like Noplace Is There. Alone in my freshman year dorm room on a Sunday night in February, I listened to Home in full for the very first time, and as I sat alone at my desk with nothing but my shaky hands gripping a coffee mug to keep me company, I found it hard to pay attention to anything other than the music pouring through my headphones. Listen to Andrew Luce and Rory Fresco team up on “Clue”

Rory Fresco has had himself one hell of a year in 2016. When Kanye West released “Real Friends” on Soundcloud back in January, the 18-year-old Kansas City native’s “LOWKEY” automatically played after, and people were extremely into it. Since then, Fresco has secured a record deal with Epic Records and is preparing for his major label debut. In anticipation of that release, Fresco has released “Clue” with 18-year-old producer Andrew Luce.

Luce provides a killer beat and some excellent production for Fresco to rap over, and the end result is a great track that lends itself to repeat listening. Much like on “LOWKEY,” Fresco utilizes heavy autotune to great effect, and the hook for “Clue” will be on repeat in your head for weeks.

Check out “Clue” below, and let us know what you think of the track down in the comments. Read more »

Tomás Doncker supporting ‘The Mess We Made’ on Summer tour

Brooklyn-based Global Soul pioneer and True Groove founder Tomás Doncker has announced a run of performances to take place this Summer at various venues and festivals. Supporting his latest album, The Mess We Made, a powerful blues epic inspired by the Charleston Massacre, Doncker will be joined by the True Groove All-Stars for what they’re calling The True Groove Summer Celebration.

In regards to his latest effort and where he’s at as a musician, Doncker has said, “Great music transcends. It elevates and transports us to different places, to different states of mind. It opens the doors of healing and tolerance. Its mere existence makes us better! I’ve always wanted to be a part of that story. My participation in that far outweighs any so-called ‘career’ I might have. No regrets or hesitation on my end as far as that’s concerned.” Read more »

REVIEW: Thrice return with powerhouse new record, ‘To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere’

thrice review

Artist: Thrice
Album: To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere
Genre: Rock

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any new music from Thrice, but they’ve welcomed us back with complete and utter ease in “Hurricane,” the first track off of the band’s ninth LP, To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere. With buzzed guitars and airy sounds leading to an implosive introduction, “Hurricane” bleeds with the same ferocity listeners felt as the band announced their hiatus back in 2012. Read more »

The first look at 2017’s live action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is here

Earlier this year, Disney dipped into its acclaimed vault of animated movies and came up with the charming and gorgeous live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. Today we got our first look at the next live-action remake of a Disney classic in the teaser for Beauty and the Beast.

Operating under the assumption that pretty much everyone interested in this has already seen the 1991 animated original, there’s not much in the way of plot in this teaser, which you can watch below. We get a lot of very pretty time lapses of the Beast’s (Dan Stevens) castle falling into disrepair, a piano plunking out the instantly recognizable song that gives the movie its name, and our first listen to the voice of Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere. Most importantly, we get our first look at Emma Watson as Belle along with the Enchanted Rose.

Beauty and the Beast, which will land in theaters March 17, 2017, has a phenomenal cast, with Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen, and Stanley Tucci among those joining Watson, McGregor, and Stevens.

Will you be seeing Disney’s next foray into live-action adaptations? Sound off in the comments. Read more »

Lincoln Jesser releases ultra-smooth “Time Will Tell”

Los Angeles producer Lincoln Jesser has teamed up with Little Wolves vocalist Samuel Jacobs for a massive new single. Entitled “Time Will Tell,” the Spinnin’ Records backed release finds Jesser laying down a deep house cut that Jacob navigates with a performance powerful enough to consider radio-ready.

According to Jesser, the track came to fruition after the two connected via Soundcloud and ended up with a lyrical theme that was highly relevant to his life as he noted, “The lyrics, ‘Time Will Tell me if I’m right about it,’ really resonated with me because my music has been transitioning into a new phase as of late.” Soon after being told by a self-proclaimed energy healer “to embrace the ‘and’ of life, not the ‘or’,” the track’s release was confirmed and the producer’s decision to pursue a new musical vision was duly rewarded.

Give “Time Will Tell” a listen after the jump and click here for links to stream the track on Apple Music and Spotify as well. Read more »

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’ is the rare sequel that tries

neighbors 2 review

Film: Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
Directed by: Nicholas Stoller
Starring: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron

Do sequels really need to exist? This thought kept bouncing around in my head before seeing Neighbors 2, a movie that more or less finds a legitimate reason to exist. As is with almost every second entry, the audience is promised more of the same with some new stuff thrown in to appease the grumps. Most sequels really just deliver more of the same amidst months upon months of hype behind it. How many times does an audience need to be subjected to the same contrived, dramatic and action beats before enough is enough? Luckily for you (and everyone else), Neighbors 2 understands this sort of criticism and strives to be much more than its predecessor. Read more »

REVIEW: Ariana Grande’s powerhouse vocals shine on ‘Dangerous Woman’

ariana grande review

Artist: Ariana Grande
Album: Dangerous Woman
Genre: Pop
Label: Republic Records

Let me start this review by stating an extremely obvious fact: Ariana Grande has a damn good voice. It’s the kind of voice that comes along infrequently, the kind that makes you want to stand in your shower and belt as hard as you can into your shampoo bottle, and the kind that makes it feel like Grande’s debut album, 2013’s Yours Truly, has been around much longer than it has.
