Legendary Announces King Kong Prequel ‘Skull Island,’ Sets 2016 Release Date

San Diego Comic-Con International is taking place right now in California, and over the next day or so you will likely see a slew of headlines coming out of the studio-hosted panels that have long served as the main Saturday attraction. Our coverage has been pretty light thus far, but starting with this post we intend to change that. Strap in.

At the very end of the Legendary Pictures panel in Hall H this morning, studio head Thomas Tull returned to the stage to share one last piece of previously unreleased information. The surprise, which had not been teased anywhere, was that Legendary has begun working on a King Kong prequel based on the mythical island that the gigantic beast called home prior to the events that brought him to New York City. No cast or directors were revealed, but Tull did share a short teaser with the crowd, which our friends at /Film described just a short while ago:

The clip started showing a rain storm pouring down over big waves in the ocean. Audio narration included lines from the Heart of Darkness: “Going up that river was like traveling back to the beginning of the world, when the plants ran wild and the trees were kings.” Shots of an island, lush jungle, monkeys and creatures … “Being alone in the wilderness, it had looked within itself, and by heavens! I tell you, it had gone mad. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.” We see a cave on the island shaped like a skull. Reveal of the logo Legendary’s “Skull Island”

There have been many films that featured King Kong and the island he calls home, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.

Peter Jackson gave audiences a beautiful look at Skull Island when he brought King Kong back to life in the mid-2000s. That film, which starred Jack Black, featured Kong battling dinosaurs. It’s unclear if this film will stick to the mythology on display in that title, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if that turned out to be the case. You can view footage from that film below.

Skull Island has been given a November 4, 2016 release date. Expect additional production information, including a full plot synopsis and cast list, to surface sometime in the weeks ahead.
