REVIEW: The Damnwells – ‘The Damnwells’

Artist: The Damnwells
Title: The Damnwells
Label: Independent
Genre: Indie Rock

While often quite permeable, our musical palates allow for very little flexibility in terms of what we feel comfortable listening to. Certain people feel for hard-hitting lyrical attributes, some look to instrumentation for inspiration, and others run to records blindly and wait until something feels right. Listening to The Damnwells’ fifth studio album (and their first effort with the band’s original lineup since 2006) is a combination of all three mentioned above.

Comparing this self-titled effort to their older records would not do either justice. The Damnwells is …

Incubus Break Their Silence With Brand New Song, “Absolute Calling”

California five-piece Incubus have previously announced that they will be putting out two new EPs this year under their new label, Island Records, some time during the first half of the year.

In conjunction with this much-anticipated news, the band has finally given us a taste of what is to come via a brand new single entitled “Absolute Calling.” As you quickly begin to notice they’ve channeled more trance-y/electronic elements in this new track, you also begin to realize that it is a fitting, present-day move, especially with their most recent offering, If Not Now, When?, stemming all the …

Modest Mouse Offer Scenic Video For Low-Key Single, “Coyotes”

On the eve of No Cities To Love‘s much-lauded release, Modest Mouse has taken another step toward ending an album dry spell less than two years shorter than Sleater-Kinney’s own. The second single off new full-length Strangers To Ourselves – as melancholy a song as you’d expect on an album with that title – has debuted.

Premiering on Interstate-8 earlier today, “Coyotes” is just a bit reminiscent of Isaac Brock’s Ugly Casanova work, only less weird and with more harmonies. Or perhaps that it sounds less like a We Were Dead b-side than “Lampshades on Fire” – …

REVIEW: Bobby Shmurda – ‘Shmurda She Wrote’ EP

Artist: Bobby Shmurda
Album: Shmurda She Wrote
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

After a summer that sent him rising from a nobody to one of the most blogged about names in urban music, Bobby Shmurda has all the hype in the world and none of the work to back it up. Though he’s become a household name in many parts of the country, not to mention having been seen rubbing shoulders with the hip-hop elite on the strength of his breakout hit, the young man behind “Hot Nigga” was nowhere to be found on the biggest must watch lists of up-and-coming emcees released …

Stream Bobby Shmurda’s New EP, ‘Shmurda She Wrote’

Before the “Shmoney Dance” broke out through the United States late this year, Ackquille Jean Pollard, more commonly known as Bobby Shmurda, was relatively under the radar.

Having signed to Epic Records not too long ago, the breakout rapper from Brooklyn is scheduled to release his debut EP, Shmurda She Wrote, on November 10. The 5-track EP features his viral Billboard chart single, “Hot Nigga,” whose music video acquired over 30 million hits in just a couple of months,. In addition to this, the EP also contains four other new tracks, two of which feature rapper Ty Real.…

Bobby Shmurda Announces ‘Shmurda She Wrote’ EP

You’ve got to hand it to Bobby Shmurda for embracing the numerous puns his name is able to create. If nothing else, at least he has a sense of humor.

Now that the heat from “Hot Nigga” has begun to die down, Epic Records is looking to make back their Bobby Shmurda investment money with the release of the young emcee’s Shmurda She Wrote EP on November 10. The five-track digital release will be the rapper’s first since signing with the label earlier this year. You can view the artwork and track list at the end of this …

UTG INTERVIEW: Steve Rennie, Manager of Incubus, Founder Of Renman Music & Business

From time to time, a chance to interview someone we’ve long admired comes up that we simply cannot resist. Stevie Rennie is a music industry expert who started as a promoter in Los Angeles, became a record executive for Epic Records, and ended up managing Incubus. He’s now started his own website for those who want to learn about the music industry, Renman Music & Business (or RenmanMB), and launched an Indiegogo campaign to support it. We were able to catch up with him on a Friday before the itch to golf took over.

Death Grips Launch Their Own Label Thirdworlds

Death Grips have not had the best luck with finding a stable label home and today they create their own sanctuary, called Thirdworlds. The label’s official logo can be seen to your left in the feature image box.

Thirdworlds isn’t exactly all that independent though. A quote from the press states that the home to Death Grips was “created via a very unique relationship with Harvest/Capitol, to be distributed by Caroline.” We can all expect a new album from the group in 2014.
