R.I.P. – Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele

Type O Negative vocalist/bassist Peter Steele passed away Wednesday due to heart failure, according to a statement released by the band. He was 48.

News of the death first surfaced when Steele’s friend and Fuse VJ Juliya Chernetsky tweeted, “Peter Steele passed today. I loved my friend…our idol…my heart is with his band and family…” Rumors spread in 2005 that Steele had died after the band posted an image online of a tombstone bearing his name and the dates 1962-2005. But the rumor was part of a publicity push surrounding the band’s signing at the time to SPV Records.

Steele was a founding member of Fallout, a precursor to Type O Negative, as a teenager in the ’80s, then went onto play with thrash-metal outfit Carnivore before starting the goth-heavy Type O Negative in 1990. The band released seven studio albums with Steele beginning with 1991’s Slow, Deep And Hard and ending with 2007’s Dead Again. The band’s breakout success was 1993’s platinum-selling Bloody Kisses, featuring “Black No.1 (Little Miss Scare-All)” and the band’s cover of Seals And Crofts’ “Summer Breeze.”

Our sincere condolences to Steele’s family, friends and fans.
