RUMOUR: Twilight To Get A Spin-Off?

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into theatres (well, not quite, Breaking Dawn Part 2 isn’t out til next month), it seems you may breathe a heavy sigh of frustration as the Twilight saga may yet continue in another form. Rumours continue to emerge which indicate that studio Lionsgate/Summit may be considering a spin-off of Twilight to pick up where Breaking Dawn will leave off. It seems any potential project could focus on more secondary characters, such as the Wolf Pack or even the Volturi clan, in a bid to further explore the world of Stephenie Meyer’s characters.

Needless to say – and calm down before you react – one can take this news with a heavy pinch of salt, especially as the studio already took the time to deny anything was in the works earlier in the year. That said, their exact phrasing was “We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support Stephenie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be the last one unless that should change.” In other words, this is the last one until it isn’t. Or rather, if the author should decide there’s more to be done with this much-maligned story (and she did add a spin-off of her own in the form of the 2010 novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, based on a minor character in Eclipse), you may expect more irritation courtesy of the denizens of Forks in the future. The more cynical among us will also note the numerous dollar signs sure to be skewing the studio’s judgement in favour of any potential projects.

As an actual living breathing non-teenage Twilight fan (again, I never claimed to have street cred), I can’t say I’d be that adverse to some kind of feature focusing on the other characters. That said, I speak for absolutely no one else at UTG in expressing such partiality, and while once again suggesting that you focus on the word ‘rumour’ above, you can feel free to sound off in the comments below.
