There have been a number of films in recent years telling the tale of an individual trapped in unfortunate circumstances with only their thoughts to keep them company. Of those, only a few have really been worth remembering longer than the time it took to walk from the cineplex to your vehicle. Director William Dickerson wants to add another must-see film to this subgenre, and later this year he’ll attempt to do just that with Detour.
So how do you take a genre that has been beaten into the ground (no pun intended) quite a bit in recent years? By blending the most successful films together and playing Hollywood’s version of mad libs with the plot, of course. Instead of a trunk in the soil or a hand stuck in between rocks, Detour follows a man named Jackson (Neil Hopkins) who is swallowed into the Earth by a massive mudslide. Trapped in his car with no way out, he begins to fight for his life and narrate his inner thoughts on his impending doom. You can view the trailer below.
Detour hits limited theaters and iTunes March 29.
